Why this matters now

The EU is enforcing

The European Accessibility Act has applied since June 28, 2025 — and enforcement has begun: advocacy groups have put major retailers on formal notice, and the first court orders have landed. It covers most companies selling online to EU consumers, wherever they're based. Read our EAA guide.

US lawsuits keep coming

Federal website-accessibility filings under the ADA rose from 2,452 in 2024 to 3,117 in 2025 (ADA Title III tracker). Missing alt text and unlabelled forms are among the most-cited failures — exactly what this scan finds. Public-sector sites have their own deadline: Title II now lands in April 2027.

Overlays aren't the answer

The FTC fined accessiBe $1,000,000 in April 2025 over claims that its widget made sites WCAG-compliant. Fixing accessibility means fixing the HTML. What the FTC actually found.

What the scan checks

  • Images missing alt text
  • Placeholder alt text ("IMG_1234.jpg")
  • Form fields without labels
  • Links with no accessible name
  • Buttons with no accessible name
  • Missing page language
  • Missing page titles
  • Broken heading structure
  • Iframes without titles
  • Zoom disabled on mobile
  • Keyboard focus-order hijacks
  • Elements hidden from screen readers
  • Timed refreshes and redirects
  • Autoplaying media
  • Duplicate element IDs
  • …across your key pages

Why most scanners miss most problems

Nearly every accessibility tool on the market — including the cheap ones and several expensive ones — is built on the same free open-source rule engine. Rule engines are fast and they're free, which is why unlimited scanning is a commodity. But they can only answer one kind of question.

What a rule engine asks

  • Does this image have an alt attribute?
  • Does this input have a label?
  • Is this heading level in sequence?
  • Is this contrast ratio above 4.5:1?

Answerable by reading the HTML. Catches roughly a third of WCAG.

What GotAlt also asks

  • Does that alt text actually describe the image?
  • Does that label tell the user what to type?
  • Does that heading describe what follows it?
  • Would "read more" mean anything out of context?

Answerable only by judgment — we fetch the real images and read the real content.

Nobody offers this at unlimited-flat-rate pricing because it isn't free to run: every deep audit fetches your images and puts them through a vision model, at roughly 5–15¢ a page, depending on how large those images are. That's the trade — we cost more per scan, and we find the problems that survive everyone else's. The longer argument, including where rule engines beat us.

For agencies and in-house teams

Findings worth sending a client

"14 images missing alt" is a ticket. "This product photo says banner2.jpg and the alt text on your hero contradicts the headline" is a conversation that wins remediation work.

Root causes, not error dumps

A broken nav component isn't 874 separate issues — it's one fix. GotAlt groups violations by underlying cause so developers fix the template once.

Prove the work

Every scan, audit, and manual check is logged into an evidence trail — the record auditors and clients ask for. Exporting it yourself isn't built yet; today it lives in your dashboard. We never claim a badge makes you "compliant"; we document what was done.

Cheaper tools exist and we'll tell you so: if you want unlimited rule-engine scans at a flat rate, several vendors sell that for less, and the Silktide browser toolbar gives away 200+ checks for nothing. Buy GotAlt when you need to know your alt text is right, not just present. Full pricing and what's in each plan.

What we don't claim

  • We are not an accessibility overlay and never will be. We change nothing on your site.
  • We do not assess or certify legal compliance, and no automated tool honestly can. The FTC's $1,000,000 action against accessiBe concerned specific claims that its product would make sites WCAG-compliant and keep them that way automatically — what was actually charged.
  • We cannot see everything. Computed colour contrast, keyboard traps and focus order need a rendered browser or a human. Here is the full list of what we miss.

FAQ

Does a good score mean my site is legally compliant?

No — and be wary of any tool that says otherwise. Automated checks cover a meaningful part of WCAG (the technical standard behind the EAA, ADA cases, and Section 508), but full conformance also needs human review of things like contrast, keyboard flows, and content clarity. GotAlt finds the issues machines can find, tells you honestly what's left, and helps you track progress.

Which laws does this relate to?

The scan checks WCAG success criteria — the standard referenced by the EU's European Accessibility Act (in force since June 2025), the US ADA and Section 508, the UK Equality Act, and most accessibility rules worldwide.

Does the EAA apply to my business?

Broadly: if you sell to EU consumers online, it likely applies — wherever your company is based. There's one notable carve-out: microenterprises providing services (fewer than 10 employees and under €2M turnover) are exempt. Many sellers of accessibility tools skip that detail; we'd rather you know it. Note that accessibility can still matter for you anyway — ADA exposure, customer reach, and SEO don't have a headcount exemption.

What does the scanner actually do?

Two passes. The free scan fetches your page (plus up to two linked pages) and runs 16 rule-based WCAG checks on the HTML — the same class of checks other scanners run. The deep AI audit then downloads your actual images and asks a vision model whether each alt text truly describes its image, and reads your link text and headings for clarity. We don't inject widgets or modify your site.

How is this different from the cheaper scanners?

Honestly: for rule-based checks, it isn't — most tools including ours lean on the same well-understood rules, and if that's all you need, the free tier here covers it. The difference is the deep audit. Checking whether alt text is accurate requires actually looking at the image, which costs real money per page and is why flat-rate unlimited vendors don't offer it. We charge more per site and find problems that pass every rule engine cleanly.

Is my data stored?

Free scan and audit results are returned to your browser and not kept on our side. If you sign up for paid monitoring, that's different by design: we store the pages you ask us to watch and their weekly check history, because tracking change over time is the point. Full detail is in our privacy policy.

What about the alt text generator?

Missing alt text is the most common issue we find, so we built a free AI generator to fix it: drop images in, get WCAG-friendly alt text out. 3 free images a day, after a one-time email.
