Terms of service
Last updated 9 October 2026. Written in plain English: where a lawyer needs to read this too, the plain version is what it means.
GotAlt is operated by COCOMII LLC, 1309 Coffeen Avenue, STE 10807, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA. Contact: hello@gotalt.com.
These terms explain what you're agreeing to when you use the site: the scans, the deep audits, the free tools, and the paid plans.
What the service is
GotAlt is a web accessibility checking tool. It fetches pages you point it at, runs automated rule-based checks (16 checks covering things like missing alt text, page language, heading structure, form labels and more), and, where you ask for it, sends images and page content to a vision model for a deeper AI audit that checks whether alt text is actually true of the image it describes, not just present.
The free tier gives you 5 rule-based scans a day (up to 3 pages each), 1 deep AI audit a day, 1 alt text check a day, and 3 alt text generations a day. The rule scan needs no signup; the AI-powered features ask for an email address once before they'll run, and that one verification is good for 3 AI runs total across the audit, the alt text check, and the generator combined, not up to 5. Use up those 3 and you'll need to verify your email again before the AI tools run further, even if one of the individual daily limits above hasn't been reached yet. Free AI use is additionally subject to a total daily spending ceiling across all visitors, so those features can be temporarily unavailable even if you personally haven't hit your own limit (see "Free tier" below). Paid plans (Professional and Agency) are described on the pricing page and are started by email (see the "Paid plans" section below).
Acceptable use
GotAlt reads publicly available pages the same way a search engine or a browser does: one polite HTTP request, identifying itself, honouring robots.txt. Checking a public page is not something you need anyone's permission for: plenty of accessibility work, competitive research and journalism depends on being able to look at a public web page.
What matters is what you do next. These are the rules:
- Don't use it to attack or overload anyone. Not as a way to send unwanted traffic at someone else's site, probe it for unrelated vulnerabilities, or otherwise cause harm. This is an accessibility checker, not a load-testing or penetration-testing tool.
- Don't use the results to harass, extort, or publicly shame. Sending a site owner a private, accurate finding is ordinary professional practice. Publishing "here are the failures of a company that didn't ask us" is not, and GotAlt may not be used for it.
- Don't present our output as an authoritative or legal assessment of someone else's site. It is a partial automated check that can be wrong in either direction. Saying otherwise to a third party is a misrepresentation, and it's yours, not ours.
- Don't circumvent the free-tier limits, for example by automating requests across many IP addresses. Those limits exist because each audit has a real processing cost.
- If you're testing a client's site, tell them. Not because these terms require it, but because turning up with an unrequested audit of someone's website is a worse opening than asking first.
What we do on our side, whoever submitted the URL:
- We respect
robots.txt. If a site disallows our fetcher, we don't crawl it. If your ownrobots.txtblocks a page you want checked, that's a setting you control, and we won't ignore the directive to work around it. - We rate-limit ourselves. Scans and audits are throttled so that checking a site never looks like or behaves like an attack. We don't open concurrent connections to finish faster.
- We identify ourselves in the user agent, with a link back here, so any site owner reading their logs can see exactly who fetched the page and why.
- We don't keep the pages or images we fetch. They're read, assessed, and discarded when the request ends.
- We use our own tools on sites we don't own: to research the market, to build the sample report, and sometimes to show a prospective customer a real finding on their own site. We hold ourselves to every rule in the list above when we do.
We may suspend or block access for use that violates this section, without notice, particularly where it risks harming a third party's site or our own infrastructure.
No warranty on results
What we don't claim about our output
GotAlt's scans and audits are provided "as is," with no warranty that results are complete or accurate. The rule-based scan checks a fixed list of 16 issues; it does not check colour contrast, keyboard traps, focus order or visibility, actual screen-reader behaviour, reading order, cognitive load, or anything injected by JavaScript after the page loads. The deep AI audit uses a vision model to judge whether alt text is true of an image, and vision models make mistakes: a verdict can be wrong in either direction.
A clean report from GotAlt is not proof your site has no accessibility problems. A flagged issue is not proof it's the only one. Treat every result as a starting point for a human to verify, not a finished judgement.
We do not certify legal compliance
GotAlt does not certify, guarantee, or warrant that your site is compliant with the WCAG, the ADA, the European Accessibility Act, Section 508, the Equality Act, AODA, or any other law or standard, and no automated tool can. Automated testing can reliably catch only a portion of accessibility best practices; independent estimates put the machine-detectable share at roughly a third of WCAG 2.0 (Karl Groves puts it at approximately 25–29% definitively testable, with about 40% not testable by a tool at all). The rest requires a human.
You must not represent a GotAlt report, scan, or audit, in whole or in part, as a certification, guarantee, or evidence of legal compliance, to your customers, in marketing materials, in a legal proceeding, or anywhere else. Doing so misrepresents what the tool does. In April 2025 the FTC ordered accessiBe to pay $1,000,000 for representing that its product would make a site WCAG-compliant and would automatically maintain that compliance. See the FTC's final order. We built GotAlt in a way that avoids making that claim; using our output to make it yourself would be on you, not us.
None of this is legal advice, and nothing on this site should be read as a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer about your own compliance obligations.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, GotAlt's total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to the service (however the claim is framed, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) is capped at the total fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. If you're on the free tier and have paid us nothing, that cap is zero. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including lost profits, lost business, or the cost of a lawsuit or regulatory action brought against you by a third party.
No indemnification of your legal outcomes
We do not indemnify you against accessibility-related legal claims, lawsuits, fines, or regulatory penalties brought against you or your business, whatever role our reports played in your decisions. This is the industry norm rather than a gap specific to GotAlt, though we'd rather describe our own position than characterise everyone else's: some vendors do sell litigation-support add-ons, and you should read what any of them actually covers, because support with a claim is not the same thing as insurance against its outcome. What we can say plainly is that no vendor controls your compliance decisions and none can guarantee a court's or regulator's judgement, so we don't offer either. Your accessibility posture, and the legal risk that comes with it, is yours to manage; we provide information to help you manage it, not insurance against getting it wrong.
The free tier may change
The free tier (currently 5 rule-based scans, 1 deep AI audit, 1 alt text check, and 3 alt text generations per day) is provided at our discretion. We may change the limits, add restrictions, or withdraw all or part of the free tier at any time, including without advance notice. We'll try to be reasonable about it, but nothing in these terms guarantees the free tier will stay the same or continue to exist.
Two limits apply on top of your own daily allowance. First, the AI-powered features require you to supply an email address before they will run, and that verification is good for 3 AI runs total, shared across the audit, the alt text check, and the generator, not a separate allowance for each. Second, we cap the total amount the free AI features may cost us across all visitors in a single day; once that ceiling is reached those features stop until the following day, regardless of individual usage. We mention the spending ceiling so an unavailable free tool reads as a budget cap rather than a fault.
Paid plans
Professional (from $69/mo) and Agency (from $229/mo) are described in detail on the pricing page. Both are priced by the number of pages you ask us to monitor, and the price shown on that page is the price: we do not add overage or usage charges on top. Billing runs through Stripe: a subscription with automatic recurring charges and a self-serve portal to change your page count or cancel. A subscription is started by email, as follows:
- You email hello@gotalt.com to start a plan. We confirm your page count and start date, then set up your account and the first charge.
- After that, billing is automatic: Stripe handles recurring invoices and card retries, and you can update your card or page count yourself through the billing portal linked from your account page.
- You can cancel at any time, self-serve through that same portal or by emailing us; there's no lock-in contract.
- If you're not satisfied, you can request a full refund within 7 days of payment.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we'll update the date at the top of this page. We won't quietly narrow your rights or start doing something these terms say we don't do without updating them first.
Not legal advice
This isn't legal advice, and this page shouldn't be read as a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer about your own obligations.
