Does your page have one H1, or none, or four?
Paste any page's HTML and this tool pulls out every H1–H6, draws the outline a screen reader user would navigate by, and flags the structural mistakes that break that navigation.

Heading outline
That's one page, checked once
GotAlt audits heading structure — and everything else on this page — across the pages you nominate, re-checks them weekly, and tells you when a new deploy breaks something.

Structure is only half the story. This checks the shape of your headings, not the words in them.
Shape vs. wording
This tool can tell you that your H2 exists, sits in the right place, and isn't empty. It has no opinion on whether "Great Stuff" is a good H2. Whether a heading actually describes the section that follows it is a judgement call — that's what our deep AI audit reads for, page by page, alongside everything else it checks.
If you specifically want AI analysis of heading wording, on its own, without the rest of an audit, headingchecker.dev does that.
Questions
What exactly does this check?
Four things: whether the page has exactly one H1, whether any heading level is skipped on the way down (H2 straight to H4, for example), whether any heading tag is empty, and it draws the resulting outline so you can see the shape of the page at a glance. It reads only the HTML you paste — nothing is fetched, executed or uploaded.
Where do I get my page's HTML to paste in?
Right-click the page and choose "View Page Source" (or press Ctrl+U on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Option+U on a Mac), select all, copy, and paste it into the box above. That gives you the HTML as your server sent it.
Does this tell me if my headings are well-written?
No. It tells you the count, order and emptiness of your headings — nothing about whether the words are any good. A heading that reads "Section 4" passes every check here and still tells a screen reader user nothing. Judging wording needs either a human or a model reading the heading alongside its content, which is what our deep audit and tools like headingchecker.dev are for.
What if my page builds its headings with JavaScript?
This tool only sees what's in the HTML you paste. If you paste the output of "View Page Source" on a JavaScript-heavy page, you're often looking at the pre-render shell, and real headings added after load won't be there. Try copying from your browser's Elements/Inspector panel instead — that shows the rendered DOM, headings included.
Why does a skipped heading level matter?
Screen reader users commonly navigate a page by jumping between headings of a given level, using the outline the way a sighted user scans a table of contents. When a level is skipped — an H2 followed directly by an H4 with no H3 — that navigation model breaks: content seems to vanish or appear at the wrong depth, even though it's all still on the page.
